This clever, family friendly film has important underlying messages delivered in a unique way.
Zootopia details the unlikely partnership between a rabbit police officer and a red fox con artist as they uncover a conspiracy that involves missing predator civilians.
The script is fantastic, Disney always hires “the best” and Jared Bush and Phil Johnston have created a fantastic universe that these quirky characters inhabit. The mystery element of the film is the driving narrative force, but it’s the characters and relationships that give the film heart. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman are both wonderful in their roles, their chemistry is superb and while an unlikely pairing it works beautifully.
The animation is superb, the level of detail that has been gone to helps immerse the audience in this fantastical universe. The underlying racial themes are exceptionally clever, nothing is “shoved in your face,” but the metaphor that underplays the film is exceptionally clever and it is a great way to teach children to be accepting of everyone, no matter how different they may be.
Overall, yes it’s a family animated film, but it has wonderful characters, superb animation and a lot of heart. It’s certainly a very enjoyable film.
