With a great cast, based on a hugely successful book this should’ve worked, but alas it doesn’t
A woman keeps a diary of her extended stay at a mental hospital.
The script is heavily exaggerated compared to the book, everything is bigger more eventful, it takes away the humanity of it. There’s no naturalism left and that shows in the performances. No matter how good Vanessa Redgrave, Rooney Mara and Eric Bana are, the dialogue is more like that of a soap opera. The cinematography is lavish and the score haunting, but as the dark material is so heavily romanticised it doesn’t allow the impact of the story to affect the viewer.
Overall one to avoid this Holiday season.
