The Martian - 4 Stars

Enjoyable sci-fi film uses impressive CGI and real “science” to advance interesting plot.

What makes the sci-fi film different to your average thriller is the interjected humour. Matt Damon’s character while trapped on Mars makes many jokes to himself, on his video journal and to NASA when he’s able to communicate with them. This doesn’t detract from the serious nature of the film, but enhances the enjoyment and breaks the tension.

The film’s script is clever and you could really feel the tension growing in the audience, as the film got more intense. Ridley Scott’s direction is superb and the 80s soundtrack is impressive.

The entire cast are superb, Damon offers one of his best performances and Jessica Chastain is a great counterpart. Jeff Daniels and Sean Bean played excellent supporting roles. The whole cast really does a fantastic job!

Overall this is a superb sci-fi film that has real heart, emotion and a wonderful soundtrack.
