Spy is a genuinely funny movie, but is hardly intellectual.
The great thing about Spy is it was aware of exactly what type of film it was; it didn’t try to be anything else. The writing itself wasn’t bad, there were a couple of plot twists that were actually surprising, unlike some real spy movies.
The surprise star of the film is Jason Statham, his comedic performance and delivery is amazing – and entirely unexpected. Melissa McCarthy’s performance is OK, but the comedic writing of the film supports her heavily. I’ve never been a huge fan of her work and while I enjoyed this film much more than “Tammy” it’s not her performance that holds the film together. Jude Law and Miranda Hart also feature in strong comedic roles and delivery their lines superbly.
Overall this film is fun and nothing more. If you are looking for a relaxing , laugh out loud movie then this is it!
