NT LIVE: Medea - 5 Stars

National Theatre Live unleashes a powerful play to open its 6th cinematic season!

Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she’s left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day’s grace. It’s time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds dear. I choose to take back my life.

My life.

Visually this play is stunning, it has a simple and minimalistic set that is used superbly throughout the play. The use of music and lighting helps to tell the story and convince the audience of Medea’s sanity and puts her deeds in a more horrific light. Originally written by Euripides, Ben Power has adapted the play and made it slightly easier to understand for modern audiences and set the play in what appears to be a more modern setting.

The real gems of this production are the astounding cast. Michaela Coel opens the play and sends shivers down the audiences’ spines as she gives her depressing appraisal of the situation. Supporting actors Martin Turner and Toby Wharton are both stunning in their roles and the amount of emotion the entire cast puts into the show is truly breathtaking. Danny Sapani plays Jason in this production and gives the performance of a lifetime. He begins portraying a man at one of the happiest moments of his life to losing everything and everyone he ever loved. Helen McCrory plays Medea and fills her performance with emotion, strength, courage, passion and a sense of weakness.

This production of Medea is superb and will be enjoyed by everyone who watches it!
