Another miss for the Jack Reacher franchise won’t make fans happy.
Tom Cruise has taken another swing at Lee Child’s popular, ex-military drifter, Jack Reacher, with Never Go Back. When Army Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), who heads Reacher's old investigative unit, is arrested for treason, Reacher will stop at nothing to prove her innocence. But in the process, he too gets framed and hunted down while he's trying to uncover a major government conspiracy that caused the deaths of two soldiers.
It’s no secret that fans of the book aren’t fans of Cruise’s portrayal of Reacher and this film won’t do anything to make that better, however if mindless action is what you’re after, then this is the film for you. It’s a Tom Cruise action film, so expect some corny one-liners, fist fights, car chases, lots of running and more fistfights and one-liners.
Cobie Smulders really held her own, but didn’t get as much screen time as she should have. However, her character was strong and I look forward to seeing her take on more action roles in the future.
Overall, it’s a movie that knows what it is and should be taken as just that: a somewhat predictable action film, that still gives a good night out, if you aren’t looking for any real story.
