A clever blend of documentary and dramatic recreation makes this film a nail-biting two hours.
Four young men mistake their lives for a movie and attempt one of the most audacious heists in U.S. history.
I was initially unsure of how the blend of interviews and “acting” would work. Yet it is actually remarkably clever, once your mind adjusts to the unusual style seeing the real life criminals tell their story adds a new level of depth to the drama we see. Evan Peters shines in the lead role and Barry Keoghan, Jared Abrahamson and Blake Jenner support him excellently.
The cinematography, music and script are also well thought out. What’s most interesting is that initially the film presents itself like a heist film (ala Oceans 8), but as the audience watches the characters evolve you no longer want them to actually go through with the robbery. It cleverly subverts our expectation of emotional investment.
Overall a clever, unique film that is certainly worth checking out.
