20th Century Women - 5 Stars

My favourite film since American Hustle.

The story of a teenage boy, his mother, and two other women who help raise him among the love and freedom of Southern California of 1979.

There’s something unique about this movie, it’s realistic without seeming over-the-top. It isn’t trying to be anything more than it is. Mike Mills’ exceptional script has created characters with such depth that you entirely believe that each exists outside of these 2hrs. Elle Fanning is one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, following her performance in The Neon Demon she’s managed to take on an even more complex character and do it well beyond her years.

Annette Bening is exceptional, as is Greta Gerwig. Billy Crudup and Lucas Jade Zumann also offer strong performances. The cinematography is excellent, the music perfectly suited and overall there’s nothing I can fault.

One movie I’d happily rush back to see.
