American Sniper - 3.5 Stars

An improvement on Clint Eastwood’s last film, but this graphic war movie is not overly impressive.

U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend."

This movie has been nominated for 6 Academy Awards and compared to some of the other Oscar Contenders out there that I’ve reviewed this one falls very short.

Bradley Cooper gives a solid performance, his accent can at times be difficult to understand and he doesn’t always look that comfortable with a gun, which of course he should be. While his performance in this film is solid, it’s not brilliant and certainly not deserving of an Oscar.

The script, adapted from Chris Kyle’s own book is strong, it sometimes can be seen to over-glorify the horrific job that Kyle had to do, but I’m sure his book may have done the same.

For me one of the outstanding aspects of this film is over the whole 2 hours (which could have easily been shortened) only 3 pieces of music were used. This is an incredible feet and it helps to show the intensity of the war, if you do end up seeing the film try and notice what scenes music is used for, and you will understand how clever music is used.

Overall this film doesn’t deserve any of the 6 Oscar nominations it has received. While it is a solid film, it isn’t of Oscar standard, but it is one of Clint Eastwood’s better films over the last couple of years. People interested in the war or in Kyle’s history will certainly find this film intriguing and fans of Clint Eastwood are sure to flock to the cinema anyway to make up their own minds.

Overstuffed, clunky and boring - this film either needed to be heavily cut or turned into a mini-series. Set in contemporary Chicago,...
